Papunya Tula Artists congratulates artist and shareholder Yinarupa Nangala on her recent success at the 26th Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Award. This inaugural award is hosted by the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) in Darwin.
Yinarupa was awarded the $4,000 Telstra General Painting Award for her untitled work. Yinarupaâ??s painting depicts designs associated with the rockhole site of Mukala, east of Jupiter Well in Western Australia.
Upon accepting her award Nangala chose to acknowledge her deep attachment to Papunya Tula Artists, reminding the strong crowd in attendance that her father, the late Anatjari Tjampitjinpa and her late husband, Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi, were both significant artists of the company.
This award is testament to Yinarupa’s perusal of a unique aesthetic that distinguishes her amongst a dynamic group of painters from her home community of Kiwirrkura in Western Australia. We congratulate her sincerely of this award and thank the judges, Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Elizabeth Ann Macgregor and Curator of Indigenous Art at the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Carly Lane.
