Indigenous Protected Area status granted to 4.2 million hectares of Pintupi country

Pintupi traditional owners have signed an agreement declaring 4.2 million hectares of their land an Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) and in doing so, have helped to create the largest protected area of arid land on earth.
The agreement, between the the Federal Government and the Pintupi people of the Gibson Desert, will provide funding for the ongoing care of this stretch of country, using traditional and modern methods.
The traditional stories of this country are retold through the paintings the Pintupi present to the world, via the company they own and direct: Papunya Tula Artists Pty Ltd.
